Barbaric Yelp

Ok, I had a lot of problems with this place so rather than write a long drawn out thing I am going to give you the basics and then write a list.

The one really good thing I can say is that this place is beautiful inside — it was too cold to sit outside but I am sure the other reviewers cover the beer garden. Their fries were good.

I was dining for dinner on a Sunday night with 3 other people.

Here are the problems I had, in no particular order:

* No appetizer plates brought to use with our cheese plate appetizer. I dropped half my Maytag blue on the floor.

* No cider on the beer menu. I don’t like regular beer, and most places with a good list, e.g. Blanc, or Harry’s Country Club, have a cider. I will come back to the alcohol offerings again in a moment.

* Boulevard Pilsner was $5 for a bottle, Schlitz was $3. Other places, these beers are the same price point. The premium beers were also a little higher. La Fin du Monde is $2 more than at The Drop.

* My grilled vegetable sandwich was COLD grilled vegetables, but the menu doesn’t say that they are cold. They were kinda slimy and gross, not grilled and succulent. The focaccia bread was pretty awful too — like worse than Panera bad. I had them sub the tomatillo salsa for Dijon vinaigrette (because I thought I was getting a hot sandwich), which was actually straight up Dijon mustard when they brought it to me in a ramekin.

* The grits in the shrimp and grits my friend ordered were more like cornbread dough. Really thick and doughy tasting. The dish could have used a roux, and maybe some collard greens or something else green on the plate other than green onion.

* I had to ask for the dessert menu. The server was just kind of clueless. Oh, and only 1 of the 7 desserts was available.

* When we were leaving, only THEN did I notice that there’s a room off the main dining room, and if you go INTO that room there’s a BAR. Had I KNOWN there was a bar, I would have had drinks with my friends, but the server never mentioned that there was liquor in addition to the beer list, nor is there a sign above that doorway saying there’s a bar. There was no cocktail menu, nothing. When they opened it was known they didn’t have liquor, so it’s the kind of thing they really should be telling people.

* The server didn’t ask how to split the check, and split everyone’s, which was fine, but he ran mine and my boyfriend’s tickets as separate transactions on my card even when we explained we were together — which seemed really odd. Again he was just clueless.

In summary, I think I’d give it another try but only go to the bar area for one drink, and order the fries again. Then I’d go somewhere that the prices are what they should be, and the servers are a little more with it. I feel bad because I want to support local places, but I have 3 other choices on that block alone if I want to spend money on the Westside.
